The
pysanka, a decorated egg, which is
sometimes called “the Icon
of the Universe”
has since pagan times, symbolized
nature’s rebirth in the spring,
was and still is
common among all Slavic peoples. With the coming of Christianity, the
Pysanka became a part of the Easter Traditions of various nations, including
The Ukraine. Here it underwent the greatest growth and richest ornamentation.
The
method used in this workshop is
simple use of beeswax and Dyes.
The basic symbolism and history of
this ancient art will be discussed& demonstrated.
Please
Note:
Students are asked to bring their own eggs. There should be a mixture
of both brown and white
eggs with smooth, unblemished surfaces. Organic if possible. The students
in the workshop typically produce a dozen decorated eggs to take home.
( Depending on availability: Goose eggs may be available.)
