Matteo is from Ravenna, Italy. His work comprises both classic and modern designs, while adhering to the traditional working methods. His mosaics reflect the individual nature of each tessera, which he cuts by hand using tools similar to those which would have been used over 2000 years ago by Roman craftsmen. He currently works at his studio in Arlington, VA

Students will learn to use the hammer and hardie, the same tools used in antiquity to create mosaics. Each participant will have the opportunity to create two mosaics to take home.

The art of Mosaics transcends all time and space, it continues to enlighten the viewer with its amazing strategic design in beautiful stone and glass.

    • Theory lessons - the most important mosaic techniques
    • Learning and/or skill improvement, by level
    • Execution of two mosaics: one will be a copy of an ancient mosaic using the Ravenna technique, and one will be a personal design using the direct technique.
    • Use of special materials, wide array of mosaic designs to choose from.
    • Instruction to be complemented by visual resources and commentary by the instructor.
    • This workshop is taught by a professional teacher with long experience in 2D and 3D mosaics, both antique and modern.
